Many “free PDF editor” apps upload your file to a server, convert it there, then send a download link. That is convenient — and it means a third party temporarily holds whatever was in the document (contracts, IDs, medical forms).
What “on-device” should mean
- Open files through the system picker you control
- Process pages locally when the feature claims offline or on-device
- No account required for basic editing
- A privacy policy that states whether documents leave the phone
SmartPath PDF apps
Omnia PDF is described in its privacy policy as processing documents on your device, with optional on-device models you download, no user accounts, and contact at admin@smartpathapps.com. Full policy: Omnia privacy.
OmniDoc PDF Editor is the related SmartPath web/app preview for view, edit and convert workflows (listed as under development on the site). Online lab: OmniDoc webapp.
Practical checks for any PDF app
- Turn on airplane mode and see which features still work
- Read whether OCR or “AI chat with PDF” sends page text to a server
- Prefer clearing cache after working with sensitive files
- Avoid granting broad storage access if a picker-based flow is enough
